A: No. While we accept applications from certified officers, the FLPD accepts applications from non-certified candidates as well. The FLPD will send you to the police academy at the City’s expense where you will become certified once you are hired. While attending the police academy, you will receive full pay and benefits.

The following must be presented with your application for Certified Police Officer:
Proof of FDLE certification or Police Officer with training curriculum from a home or state academy. Out-of-state certified candidates must have one year of full-time, independent work experience in patrol (excluding any academy training hours).
Q: Does the City of Fort Lauderdale Police Department accept lateral transfers from other police departments?
A: The City of Fort Lauderdale Police Department welcomes State of Florida certified officers and Out-of-state certified officers who have one year of full-time, independent work experience in patrol (excluding any academy training hours) in order to be considered for the 92-hour Exam Qualification.
Applicants with prior law enforcement experience will be paid as follows:
- 1 to 2.9 years of full-time experience - $60,091
- 3 to 4.9 years of full-time experience - $62,483
- 5 to 6.9 years of full-time experience - $64,979
- 7 to 8.9 years of full-time experience - $67,329
- 9 or more years of full-time experience - $69,742
Out of State Applicant FAQ’s
Q: Do I need a Florida Driver’s License to be a City of Fort Lauderdale Police Officer?
A: A Florida Driver’s License is not required at the time of application for the position of Police Officer. An operator’s license equivalent to a State of Florida Class E is required at the time of application. However, by the date of hire you must possess a valid, unrestricted State of Florida Driver’s License (Class E).
Q: If I’m a certified police officer in a different state, do I have to complete the Exam Qualification Course (Comparative Compliance) before applying?
A: No, however if you are hired by the City of Fort Lauderdale Police Department we will send you to the class at the City’s expense within a year of the hiring process.
Q: How many trips will I have to make to Fort Lauderdale in order to secure employment with your agency?
A: Out of state applicants can expect to make at least two to three trips to Fort Lauderdale to complete all required tests during the hiring process.
During the first trip, the applicant will have contacted Broward College’s Institute for Public Safety Testing Center to schedule the required prerequisite testing. (CJBAT, BMST, SWIM)
When the applicant receives all of their test scores they must submit those scores along with all of the required documents with their on-line application.
If the applicant is selected to move on to the next phase of the hiring process they will be required to make a second trip to complete the oral board, polygraph exam, psychological exam and medical exam.
Not all phases are guaranteed and each depends on the outcome of the previous step.
