The Special Investigations Division is comprised of the Drug Enforcement and Vice Unit, the Major Narcotics Unit, Strategic Investigations Unit, Threat Response Unit, Technical Services Unit and Nuisance Abatement. The Division utilizes proactive policing techniques to reduce part one crime, eradicates all levels of drug/vice activity and is responsive to community concerns and needs. The Division also works in partnership with federal, state and local agencies in a variety of criminal investigations to include money laundering, organized crime and homeland security. The Special Weapons and Tactics team (SWAT) is also a part of this Division and conducts life-saving missions, warrant service, dignitary protection and other operations requiring specialized training and equipment.

Drug Enforcement and Vice Unit
The Drug Enforcement and Vice Unit investigates mid and street level narcotics dealers inclusive of the synthetic drug market. These detectives work in an undercover capacity and use covert surveillance techniques in their investigations.
Major Narcotics Unit
The Major Narcotics Unit handles major narcotics investigations and target those who traffic in illegal narcotics. They are members of High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) and conduct undercover joint operations in conjunction with several local, state and federal agencies.
Strategic Investigations Unit
The Strategic Investigations Unit is comprised of several detectives, each individually assigned to task forces in a variety of functions and jurisdictions at the federal, state and local levels. Their responsibilities vary according to their task force assignment and the nature of their tasks is considered confidential.
Threat Response Unit
The Threat Response Unit investigates all threats against local officials and City infrastructure. This unit works closely with Homeland Security, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and neighboring jurisdictions when investigating threats of domestic based terrorism. This unit also conducts pro-active exercises with schools throughout the City in preparation for critical incidents.
Technical Services Unit
The Technical Services Unit supports the entire agency with covert surveillance needs and special events. They routinely assist in placing camera systems in areas of focus, supporting stationary surveillance vehicles, and conduct video downloads from residential and business camera systems where crimes have occurred.
The Nuisance Abatement Board is an advisory board of the City of Fort Lauderdale consisting of 5 volunteers from the community who are appointed by the City Commission. The purpose of the Nuisance Abatement Board is to promote, protect and improve the health, safety and welfare of our neighbors through the imposition of administrative fines and other non-criminal sanctions in circumstances when repeated violations continues to exist with an identified problem property.
The goal of the nuisance abatement process is for abated properties to achieve full compliance with City ordinances. Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT)
The SWAT team is comprised of officers of many ranks and is an ancillary duty that requires them to be on call 24/7. The Team possesses specialized skills and equipment that allows it to handle critical incident throughout the City that may be beyond the capability of uniformed patrol. Select members of the Fire Department are designated SWAT Medics that train and deploy with the team during operations in order to provide life-saving care to neighbors and officers in the most expeditious manner possible. The primary goal of SWAT is to provide the specialized training and equipment needed to save lives and bring critical incidents to a peaceful conclusion.
