The Traffic Investigations Unit handles special and complex investigations of a traffic nature, and currently has (2) distinct functions: Hit & Run and Traffic Homicide. The Unit is supervised by (1) sergeant, and has (6) assigned civilian specialists, plus (1) TDY (rotated/temporary training) and a PSA (civilian Public Service Aide).
The civilians are specially trained Traffic Homicide Investigators, who handle follow-up traffic investigations of a serious or hit & run nature, as well as full investigations of all accidents of a very serious nature (actual and potential traffic homicide cases, or those requiring specialized expertise). Their duties include the initial investigation, requiring "call-out" on a 24-hour basis, and the complete follow-up investigation required by Florida statute. Completed cases are presented to the State Attorneys office as applicable.
The sergeant also serves as the agency's traffic specialist, training new personnel and those in need of additional guidance in this area of specialty, and coordinating traffic related projects. Specially trained, and court recognized experts in various aspects of traffic issues, these personnel also liaison with a variety of private and government associations and special interest groups concerned with traffic safety issues, in a community policing/problem solving context.
The budgetary impact of the Traffic Investigations Unit for FY 98/99 (minus the grant-funded program mentioned) is $422,611. Almost the entire amount, $ 419,736 (99 % of the total) involves personnel related expenses. The Investigations components are located at our Police Department Main Headquarters.
