ROBBERY SUSPECT

September 4, 2002

ROBBERY SUSPECTThe Fort Lauderdale Police Department has identified Miguel Hernandez, 02-28-59, as the suspect in an armed robbery that occurred on Tuesday, September 3, 2002 at the East Side Pawn Shop, 1569 South Federal Highway.

Hernandez, also know as Miguel Beltran, entered the store shortly before 3:00 p.m. and was attempting to sell a drill to the manager. Hernandez was able to convince the manager to open a locked door to the back of the store, and when he did so Hernandez forced his way in and pulled a hand gun. Hernandez then beat the manager in the face and head before taking a large amount of cash from the office area.

Hernandez fled the scene with another suspect (no other information at this time) and both entered a late 90’s blue/green Pontiac Trans Am.

The manager was transported to Broward General Medical Center in good condition with several head wounds.

Hernandez is described as a white Hispanic male, 5’6”, 160 pounds, brown hair, brown eyes, and missing several front teeth. A photo of Hernandez is available to viewed on the Fort Lauderdale Police web site at www.flpd.org, or there is a copy in the lobby of the station to be copied if needed.

Hernandez is to be considered armed and dangerous.

FELONY HIT AND RUN

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department is requesting assistance in locating a hit and run vehicle and its driver. At approximately 2:38 a.m. in the early morning hours of September 8, 2002, a young woman was struck and killed by an unknown person driving a newer model mini van, white in color, with vertical, not horizontal, taillights. The minivan also had a roof rack. The victim and a friend were walking west, across the southbound lanes of US 1 (Federal Highway), in the 3000 block. She had just left the Copa Lounge. As the victim stepped from the median onto the roadway, she was struck by the van. The impact with the vehicle threw the victim up and over the van. Apparently her body became entangled with some part of the van and was carried for approximately 100 yards south from the point of impact before being freed and coming to rest on the roadway. Witnesses state that the van continued traveling south passed the entrance to Fort Lauderdale/ Hollywood International Airport, towards Dania and never slowed down or stopped.

The identity of the victim is not yet being released pending notification of next of kin.

The white, late model mini van should have damage to the left front, it’s windshield and possibly the roof. Anyone with any information is asked to call Fort Lauderdale Police Traffic Homicide Investigator Cheri Creque at (954) 828-5125 or Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS.
