DISTURBANCE AT DILLARD HIGH SCHOOL

June 7, 2004

On May 11th, 2004 a disturbance broke out at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale. The Fort Lauderdale School Resource Officer responded to a fight amongst several individuals on school grounds. As a result of this fight, 11 students were arrested on charges ranging from, Disturbing a School Function to Inciting a Riot. Initially, there were several different reasons told to investigators as to the cause of the disturbance. They ranged from two rival neighborhoods, a cultural conflict, and an allegation that a homosexual student propositioned a straight student.

Further investigation into this incident revealed that the cause of this fight could, in fact be the result of one of the student’s sexual orientation. Florida State Statute 877.19 recognizes these types of incidents as possible “Hate Crimes” and as such, the statute allows for enhanced criminal penalties.

The investigation has since been forwarded to the Fort Lauderdale Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division for a more in depth examination of the events leading up to the disturbance. The results of this investigation will be forwarded to the Broward County State Attorney Office. As with all investigations, the State Attorney’s Office will make the final determination of the appropriate charge(s) for prosecution.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call the Fort Lauderdale Police Department Hot Line @ 954-828-5511, Detective Jim Pott @ 954-828-5528 or Broward County CrimeStoppers.
