DUI CHECKPOINT

July 15, 2002

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department will be hosting a multi-jurisdictional DUI sobriety checkpoint at the intersection of NE 26 Ave. and East Oakland Park Blvd. on Friday, July19, 2002 between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m.

No traffic delays are expected as a result of this traffic checkpoint.

ARMED ROBBERY ARREST

July 22, 2002

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department has arrested and charged Michael Williams, 11-08-79, with one count of Armed Robbery in connection with the robbery of the Budget Inn, 2731 N. Federal Highway, on Sunday July 21, 2002.

Williams entered the business shortly after 10:00 p.m. wearing a ski mask and armed with a handgun. After committing a robbery of the business, Williams fled in a light colored S.U.V. south on Federal Highway toward NE 26 Street. The culprit description and movements matched that of the suspect in several other armed robberies that had occurred in the City of Fort Lauderdale and surrounding jurisdictions.

A vehicle matching the description given was observed fleeing the scene and a traffic stop was conducted at the intersection of NE 13 Street and NE 4 Avenue by the Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors Police Departments. Williams was taken into custody without incident. A ski mask and weapon were recovered inside the vehicle.

Williams is a suspect in the following other robberies:

  1. July 6, 2002, 6:15 a.m., McDonalds, 6360 N. Federal Hwy.
  2. July 10, 2002, 8:50 p.m., Oakland Park Inn, 3001 N Federal Hwy.
  3. July 15, 2002, 8:15 p.m., Papa Johns, 4700 N. Federal Hwy.
  4. July 16, 2002, 12:01 a.m., Circle K, 1177 W. Commercial Blvd.
  5. July 16, 2002, 10:30 p.m., Arby’s, 1720 E. Sunrise Blvd.

There are 4 others cases being investigated by the Broward Sheriffs Office.

TRAFFIC CHECKPOINT

July 22, 2002

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department will be conducting a traffic checkpoint on Wednesday, July 24, 2002, between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the 500 block of NE 13 Street.

Officers will be checking vehicles for equipment and safety violations, along with proper paperwork for drivers and vehicles.

There are no traffic delays expected as a result of this checkpoint.

MISSING ENDANGERED ADULT

July 23, 2002

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department is attempting to locate 58 year-old Jose Marcial who has been missing since July 12, 2002.

Marcial was last seen leaving his residence at 1342 Holly Heights Drive, “Holly Heights Assisted Living Facility”, at approximately 2:00 p.m. on the 12th, and has not been seen since. Marcial is a manic-depressive and requires several medications that he does not have.

Marcial is described as a white Latin male, 5’4”, 150 pounds gray hair, and is know to talk to himself.

COMMUNITY CRIME WALK

July 23, 2002

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department along with the South Middle River Homeowners Association will be sponsoring a Crime Walk and Night Out Against Crime on Friday, July 26, 2002, from 8:00 p.m. to Midnight.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Mobile Command Vehicle will be parked in the 1100 block of NW 5 Avenue where members of the community will be meeting with their neighborhood officers and detectives who will be offering the following services:

Homeowners and residents are all encouraged to come out and meet their neighbors while meeting the officers that work in their community and take part in some of the many services provided by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.

All members of the media are also invited to attend.
