7/15 - Arrest and Property Recovery

Arrest and Property Recovery

July 15, 2003

On Tuesday, July 15th, 2003, Detective Loriann Seguin noticed a boat burglary that occurred sometime in June, where Steiner Commander binoculars were missing. She ran the binoculars through the pawn database and found only one pair had been pawned this year. A white female, Katherine Dorothy Farese, D.O.B. 11/2057, pawned them. The victim also listed a Makita drill, Stinger Shop Vac, night vision monocular, and a shotgun stolen.

Detective Loriann Seguin then ran Farese through the database from 1/1/003 to the present and noticed she had 181 pawned items. A good majority of her pawns were in Hollywood, but she also pawned in Pembroke Park, Davie, and Fort Lauderdale. She listed her employer as NeatFleet Boat Detailing Company. She also listed a Hollywood address.

As Detective Seguin located the Steiner binoculars, she saw Farese pawned a Makita drill and Stinger Shop Vac at the same time. Detective Seguin contacted the victim and he gave an accurate description of the ones found.

Detective Seguin then checked with crime analysis and found one other burglary vessel that had been reported in June. After pulling the report, the listed property was all custom Sam Scott rods with Shimano and Penn reels. Detective Seguin located the rods and reels at Classic Pawn. Farese had also pawned these items along with water skis and a water board. However, we did not have a burglary with water skis missing.

After speaking with victim from the Sam Scott rods, Mr. Flack, Detective Seguin had asked him who cleans his boat. He told her NeatFleet. He gave Detective Seguin the owner's phone number. Detective Seguin phoned the owner who stated Farese worked for him during that time, but he has since fired her for stealing. Miller stated Farese worked on another boat. He also stated a boat Captain, Elliott, had things missing off of his boat but has not made a police report yet. Detective Seguin spoke with Elliott, who flew down and identified his rods and reels at Classic Pawn.

At this point, Detective Seguin phoned Hollywood Police Department and asked if they had any boat burglaries. They said they did have a case were water skis and a waterboard and other dive equipment were stolen. Detective Seguin later met a Hollywood Detective and their victim at Classic Pawn. The victim identified the water skis and water board as belonging to him. Detective Seguin met Flack, the victim of the Sam Scott rods and reels, at Classic Pawn on July 16th. He identified 5 of his rods and reels valued at $5,000. At that time, Detective Seguin told the owner of Classic Pawn if Farese came back in the store, to call her right away.

On July 17th about 10:15 a.m., Classic Pawn phoned and said they had her in the store and were stalling her for me. I sent a patrol unit over to arrest her. Farese had with her several rods and reels, tackle and outriggers in her possession when caught. Once in custody, Farese gave a taped confession to the Hollywood burglary (water skis), our two burglaries, and stating the property she was caught with came from a burglary she did that morning at Hollywood Marina. She then showed Detective Seguin which marinas she hit and the names of the boats she burglarized in Fort Lauderdale. She confessed to six more unreported burglaries. Contact has been made with most of the victims.

Farese was charged with two burglaries and two counts of dealing in stolen property from Fort Lauderdale, and one count of burglary from Hollywood. Four or five more counts of burglary pending for Fort Lauderdale.

In sum, Farese was responsible for 9 burglaries in Fort Lauderdale and two in Hollywood. A good amount of the pawned property was recovered, including two shop vacs belonging to NeatFleet (other pawned tools possibly belongs to NeatFleet). Several thousand dollars in stolen merchandise recovered.
