COPS in SHOPS

February 4, 2003

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department is one of the first Law Enforcement Agency's in Broward County to work with AB&T (Beverage) on the "Cops in Shops" program that started in Broward County during January 2003.

The "Cops in Shops" program / operation is a tool that is being used to combat the underage purchase of alcoholic beverages from licensed retail establishments. The operation is conducted with the cooperation of the retail establishment and allows for the placement of undercover officers behind the sales counter with the store clerk. It is the objective of this operation to target those persons of legal age who assist in providing / purchasing the alcoholic beverage for those who are underage.

State Beverage Agents and Detectives from the SID Vice Unit conducted their first "Cops in Shops" operation at the Circle K Store located in the 5900 block of North Federal Highway. Other targeted locations within the City of Fort Lauderdale are being evaluated.
