This story is about our Mounted Police during "Spring Break".

During our first Spring Break most of the police department managers and officers alike had little respect for the horses and their abilities. One night about one thousand college kids took over a two block section of State Road A1A totally blocking the road. With traffic at a stand still Police managers first tried using 50 foot patrolmen and 10 motor officers to clear the street. That failed and the crowd got rowdier. The Deputy Chief, who was on the scene with a City Commissioner, began considering using tear gas when Sgt. Dietrich arrived on the scene with eight mounted officers. He suggested that the horses could clear the street. Permission was given. About one third of the crowd left the street as soon as the Mounted Offices lined up for the sweep. The street was cleared in less than five minutes. That one incident made believers out of everyone that night. Word of what happened spread like wild fire around the beach and soon Mounted Officers were called upon every five minutes to clear out crowds of people by weary foot patrolman.
