Retired Detective
Caryn Cleary Robitaille

Twenty years ago I made the choice to join the ranks of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. That decision proved to be one of the wisest choices I have ever made. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department had, and still has, a reputation for employing officers who demonstrate above average abilities, as well as personal integrity.

My career with the department has enabled me to be financially secure and has provided me with opportunities to improve myself by furthering my education. After twenty years of service I am now looking forward to a comfortable retirement.

I joined the Fort Lauderdale Police Department in April 1982 and began my career working in patrol. After a few years I was chosen to work in the newly formed Crime Analysis Unit where I worked for several years. From there I went back to patrol for a short time before being selected for a position as a detective in the Crime Prevention Unit where I remain today. Although I have not pursued a career path into management, the department encourages women to seek promotion and membership in all specialized units.

During my twenty-year tenure with the Department I have been treated fairly and with respect, as a patrol officer and in my current assignment as a detective. I would encourage any woman who is looking for a challenging career and one that provides equal standing and opportunities for all personnel, to consider a career working for the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.
