The Fort Lauderdale Police Department has taken on a new role in education that includes providing teens with the opportunity to learn about law enforcement as a career option.
Students learn about various departments and careers in law enforcement as well as how a police agency functions. Classes give students hands-on exposure to many areas of police work and a better understanding of a police officer’s function. The classes are similar to the Community Police Academy offered to adults, but include a curriculum designed to hold the interests of teens through a variety of hands-on demonstrations.
Class discussions and demonstrations will address Community Policing, the police officer recruitment process, drug enforcement, special investigations, communications and more. Students will also have the opportunity to ride along with patrol officers. Classes are held at the Community Support Division office.
The Teen CPA is designed to accomplish several things. First recruit students to work in law enforcement, increase partnership with the police, and get youth involved in the community. Overall, students will receive a better understanding of law enforcement and available career opportunities while forming a stronger partnership with the Police Department.
