| Pocket Guide to Basic Creole |
The Fort Lauderdale Police Department’s Haitian Outreach Program has created a reference card for its employees. This card features commonly used phrases translated into Creole with a pronunciation key. This card is available in Property Control and the Community Support Division. | Middle River Terrace |
Component One Officers, along with District II Patrol and the Special Investigations Division, continue to work the 13th Street Action Plan. The following are some of the statistics contributed by Component One: 21 traffic citations, six bicycle citations, three bicycles seized, 18 investigative stops, and eight arrests. Officer Martinez also red tagged seven derelict vehicles.
Component One Officers continue to participate in the Middle River Terrace weekly bicycle rides and community walks. Residents meet at the Middle River Terrace Park for both events and everyone is invited. The crime walks are on Friday evenings at 7:00 p.m. and the bicycle rides are on Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m. Those interested in participating in the rides need to bring their bicycles. All bicycles must be properly registered per City Ordinance 26-183 and have proper lights. Helmets are recommended but are not mandatory. February 15th will be Officer Martinez’s last day assigned to the Middle River Terrace Homeowners’ Association. Although he will remain in Component One, Officer Martinez will be Lakeridge’s new community police officer.

Middle River Terrace’s new officer is Charles Studders. Officer Studders has been a law enforcement officer for 8 years and member of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department since 2001. Prior to joining the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, Officer Studders was a community police officer for the Farmington Hills Police Department in Farmington, Michigan. | Victoria Park and Flagler Heights’ New Community Police Officer |
Officer Glenn Galt will be the new community police officer assigned to Victoria Park and Flagler Heights Homeowners’ Associations. Officer Galt has been a member of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department since 1997 and is a field-training officer. | Graffiti Investigation-Clean up |
In response to complaints of graffiti in the area of Commercial Boulevard and Bayview Drive, PSAs Miriam Delgado, Josephine Alvarado and Terry Bryant discovered paintings under the bridge in the 5200 block of Bayview Drive. It was identified as graffiti and an investigation was initiated. The paintings were photographed and everything pertaining to this incident was forwarded to the Juvenile Crime Unit for follow-up. The City work crew was notified and the graffiti was removed.

| South Middle River |
As a result of residents complaining of street level drug activity in the 1700 block of NW 2nd Avenue, Officer Brain Kaplan has increased his presence in the area. According to the residents, open drug sales were seen during the afternoon and evening hours. Officer Kaplan has been working this area with Street Narcotics Detective Todd Hill; however, no activity has been noted. If you see drug activity please contact the Street Narcotics Unit at (954) 828-5661.
In response to residents complaining of code issues at 1238 NW 5th Avenue, Officer Kaplan initiated an action plan to address their concerns. His action plan will be evaluated after 90 days and we will give a complete report on his response.

| Sailboat Bend’s New Community Police Officer |
Officer Jamie Costas is Sailboat Bend’s new community police officer. He has 12 years of law enforcement experience with the City of Davie Police Department and 10 years as a firefighter with the Davie Fire Department. After retiring from the City of Davie, Officer Costas join the Fort Lauderdale Police Department in 2001. Officer Costas has attended the last two Sailboat Bend Homeowners’ meetings. As a result of quality of life issues discussed at the meetings, Officer Costas initiated four action plans. Each action plan will be evaluated after 90 days and we will give a compete report on Officer Costas’ response.

Officer Rosalind Wilson is Dorsey Riverbend and Durrs’ new community police officer. Officer Wilson has been a member of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department since 1984. | Walker Elementary Safety Day |
On January 31, 2003 PSAs Terry Bryant, Laura Todaro and Paul Brown hosted a Children Safety Day at Walker Elementary School, 1001 NW 4 Street. Over 150 first grade students attended the event and topics discussed were bicycle safety and stranger danger. Students were shown videotapes on both subjects and they received safety coloring books, crayons, stickers, and lollypops.

| A Month of Change |
The month of January was one of change for Component Three. Officer Sal Vasi and Officer Darren Ogden were transferred to the Patrol Division after three years of dedicated service to the Southwest Communities. Both officers worked well with the residents and did an outstanding job. Everyone assigned to the Community Support Division would like to wish them the very best.

Melrose Manor’s new community police officer is Mike Pasker. Officer Pasker has over 30 years of law enforcement experience and has been a member of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department since 1984. Prior to joining the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, Officer Pasker worked for the Baltimore Police Department. He is being transferred from the Police Training Division. Riverside Park’s new community officer is Steve Scelfo. Officer Scelfo has been a law enforcement officer for 4 years and member of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department since 2001. | Safety Classes |
Officer Clay Barrett conducted safety classes for first grade students at Westwood Heights Elementary. As a result, he received many thank you letters from the students attending his classes.
| North Fork Elementary |
On January 31, 2003 Officer Barrett hosted North Fork Elementary’s D.A.R.E. Graduation. The guest speaker was District III Patrol Captain Charmaine Gittens-Jacques. Captain Gittens-Jacques’ speech was inspirational and she received many accolades from the students, parents and school officials attending the event.
Special thanks to Officer Charles Livingston for providing the Fort Lauderdale High School’s Boys and Girls “Step Team,” which performed brilliantly.
There were eight burglaries at North Fork during the month January with extensive damage done to the pre-kindergarten portables, located on the south side of the campus. Officer Barrett provided zone alert notices to the Patrol Divisions. On January 31, at approximately 10:30 p.m. five suspects were apprehended while they were attempting break-in the school. Special thanks to K-9 Officers Tom Reed, Phil Sequin and Mark Renner as well as Patrol Officers Jeff Jenkins and Steve Degracia for their prompt response. The five individuals are suspected of causing over $15,000.00 of damage to School Board property.
| Bicycle Giveaway Contest |
Officer Duval Madrigal is pictured with three winners from the Bicycle Giveaway Contest. The winners collected twelve police trading cards and were able to redeem them for a bicycle. This program has proven to be beneficial for our youth and members of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. It gives the police department and our youth an opportunity to develop positive relationships. Collect twelve police trading cards and you too could be a winner!!

To address trash on City property, or to find out what your bulk trash pick up days are, you can call the City of Fort Lauderdale Public Services Department at 828-8000. PSAs Bryant and Blackmon are assisting Code Enforcement in their efforts to reduce the number of derelict vehicle violations throughout the City. These are quality-of-life issues which devalue the neighborhood as well as present safety hazards.

The Community Support Center offers various events such as workshops, training classes and community forums. The Center is also available to the community as a meeting place. Some of the courses that are offered to civilians and law enforcement personnel are outlined below.

License Plate Theft Prevention Program, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., while supplies last, at the Community Support Division, 533 NE 13th Street. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department is distributing, free of charge, special screws that are created to prevent the theft of license plates. The screws are affixed with a regular screwdriver, but can only be removed with a special tool held by the Police Department. For information, please call (954) 828-6400.

Landlord/Tenant Training, Wednesday evenings, February 19th and March 19th, 2003, 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., at the Community Support Division’s Training Room, 533 Northeast 13th Street. Topics include keeping illegal activity out of your property, screening applicants, the Federal Fair Housing Act, Section 8 Housing and more. Certificates of attendance will be issued upon completion of the course. The workshop is open to all interested. Fort Lauderdale Police Captain Paul Kiley and Sergeant Greg Kridos teach the classes. 19th Community Police Academy, Wednesday evenings, February 19th through May 21st, 2003, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. This 14-week program is offered to City residents, civic and government organization members. The academy is designed to foster active partnership with the community. Topics include Community Policing, Officer Selection/Recruiting, Drug Enforcement, Special Investigations, Range/Firearms, Detention Tour, Communications and more. In addition to the scheduled classes, an eight-hour “ride along” with Patrol Officers will be made available to the attendees. For more information and applications please call (954) 828-6428. Escape School, With the recent nationally publicized child abductions throughout the United States, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department is taking preventative action by providing a free safety education program for parents and children regarding abductions. Escape School is an hour-long presentation that teaches participants to trust their instincts, how to differentiate between “good” and “bad” strangers, what to do if confronted with an abductor (e.g. run, scream, disable car), and how to get people involved in their rescue. The program consists of video and role-playing exercises with the instructor, children and parents. Bob Stuber, a former California police officer, created Escape School. Dignity Memorial Funeral Providers provides this free class to the public. The class will be held Thursday, February 27, 2003, at City Hall’s Commission Chambers, 100 North Andrews Avenue, 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Please call (954) 828-6429 for more information and registration.
